  • Ballet: poetry in motion

    all photos: James Heald
Canon KISS Digital X or Canon PowerShot A-620

The daughter of two of our teachers performed in a ballet presentation at Hallym University this past weekend. While I have seen ballet performed either on television or in the movies as part of character development, I have never seen a live performance.

It was the first time using the KISS Digital X in this lighting situation, and my only regret is not having had a longer lens to use to photograph the event. Because ballet is about motion, I wanted to get images that caught arms and legs in motion, and hopefully have a face that remained stationary enough so it would not blur. I got lucky. You will notice in the fourth image that the couple is quite airborne. That is what it's all about!

Ballet is not for wimps. These men and women are athletic artists or artistic athletes in the truest sense of the concept. Boys who get involved with ballet should not fear the mockery some lesser children might have for them. Instead, let the mockery be a badge of courage, for they are doing what way too many others do not have the heart to do, and that is to dance the honorable and dignified dance of lords and ladies. Not many have the guts to do this.

  • hey dorkbutt it me

awesome pics im sooo jealous i have never seen a real ballet but if i did i would be afraid it would put me to sleep cuz its so calming.. it seems like it would like the most awesome just as a spectator experience that it would be a stress reducer and moral booster ever.. im odd i know but i love things that envoke great emotion in me....

  • Hello Jim, thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures.  I actually use to take ballet years and years ago myself.  I've always thought of ballet as a beautiful, elegant, and enchanting form of artistic expression.  (((Hugs))

  • The photos are wonderful, Jim.  I think the last one is really fine but each one is more than I could have begun to have caught.  The ballet itself had to be really special to see and you are correct, the muscle and concentration and study to do the dance is more than most are capable of.  It takes dedication to the max to dance the ballet.

I love all dance by the way and enjoy good dance movies as another part of my DVD collection.

    Take care of you,

  • I like ballet to, nice to see there are other guys who are comfortable enough with themselves to share what they consider beautiful.

  • Great shots. Ballet is a workout, for sure. The HS here used to encourage the guys to take dance, just so they'd stop being so klutzy. LOL
