the melody
flows gently on
its way to me
say what you will
get your fill as
it spills through the
hills sharing life
I cannot sleep
counted sheep that
came cheap enough
heap enough wool
just a tool fight
a duel for the
school of hard knocks
there is no one with whom to share
there is no moon at which to stare
even the stars don't seem to care
even my dreams lead me nowhere
I am not sleeping like I know I should
in the back of my mind there is deadwood
that needs to be cut into firewood
I don't mind setting fire to the night
show me the moon under intense blacklight
show me true repentence deep and contrite
then lead me to a place where I can sleep
self-righteousness has no room to complain
it embraces all the gloom
then kills faith in the woumb
one more day of hazy skies
how long til we realize
beauty our blindness denies
sun sets on day of preparation
the Sabbath is in the air
now comes rest from weekly care
let me run the victory lap with you
let me write up the story
of the burdens you carry
I would give chase with you on stony ground
letting bygones be bygones
under the light of predawn
you know you can't win
you cannot begin
to count your troubles
or dig through rubble
of a broken heart
she knows that your sin
will tear you apart
